Delia Maria Torres Altreche
October 21, 1935 – May 3, 2025
Delia Maria Torres Altreche, age 89, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2025, at her home in New York City, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico, Delia made East Harlem her home since the early 1950s, becoming a beloved figure in the community.
A cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Delia was the heart and soul of her family. Her kitchen was a place of joy, especially when she prepared her legendary Puerto Rican Pasteles—savored by friends, neighbors, and family alike in El Barrio and beyond. Her food, much like her spirit, nourished generations.
Delia was a true matriarch, defined by resilience, generosity, and a deep love for her family. She had a gift for creating warmth and laughter in any room. Her days were often filled with music, conversation, and the lively presence of beloved pets. Though she faced the challenges of dementia in her later years, the essence of her kindness, humor, and strength remained ever present. Her family will forever remember the vibrant woman who brought people together with love and tradition.
She is survived by seven of her ten children—Magdalena, Enriqueta, Santos, Miriam, Ivan, Maria, and Nancy—17 grandchildren, and 20 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sons Wilfredo and Domingo, daughter Hortencia, and was twice widowed, by Domingo DeJesus in 1967 and Pedro Altreche in 2021.
A memorial service will be held in her honor on May 9, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Manhattan Funeral Services, 300 E 104th Street, New York, NY 10029.
Delia’s life was a beautiful testament to the enduring power of love, family, and tradition. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
