Lydia Esther Cotto, 90, of New York, NY. passed away on Wednesday, October Il, 2023 peacefully in her home.
Lydia was born on October 28, 1932 in Cayey, Puerto Rico, daughter of Julio and Julia Cotto, the youngest of five siblings all who preceded her in death.
Surviving are her daughters Yvonne Santiago and Norma Shanhai, sons Danny Santiago and Jorge
Santiago, Jr., Son-in-law Errol Shanhai, Niece Nydia Arias, Nephew Jose A. Alvarado Guzman,
Grandchildren Lisette Shanhai Butler, Danny Shanhai and Lydia Santiago, Great-Grandchildren Aiden and Jovani Shanhai and many other extended family members. Lydia was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and neighbor. She was also a great foster mother.
A trailblazer Of her time, she moved from Puerto Rico at the age of 25 and went on to serve her community as an election poll worker and campaigning on behalf of candidates far local public office.
Lydia, who was also affectionately known as "Guela" to those closest to her, was also a talented seamstress, enjoyed traveling, music, painting, crafts and spending time with family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 from Ipm-6pm at Manhattan Funeral Services located at 2242 First Avenue New York, NY, 10029.
